Bank Holiday Monday 4June 2012 Jubilee Party in the Park
The Town council organised a major event in Thorne Park on 4th June 2012 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee named the “Diammond Jubilee Party in the Park”. Te event was believed to be the largest outdoor event to have taken place in Doncaster Borough on that day.
Festivities included the lighting of a Jubilee Beacon in the Park by then Mayor of Thorne, Cllr Rachel Durant, a 'Great British Taste-Off', which saw many members of the community submitting their baking efforts for adjudication.
"We don't have the opportunity to celebrate a Jubilee every year so it's important to really make an effort when the opportunity comes round..."
The Party was opened by the Mayor, and the 'Jubilee King, Queen and consort' and was free for all to attend. It aimed to create the atmosphere of a traditional street party in a Park setting. It included entertainment, games, competitions and refreshments, and the Park was dressed with bunting and flags.
From vintage cars to the bouncing castle it was clear to see that fun was had by all 4,000 believed to be in attendance throughout the day. Further, every child (and many adults!) received a free commemorative jubilee hat and various prizes were won for various events including a sack race.
A BIG thank-you goes out to Thorne Needs You, Thorne Rural Lions and the community volunteers who helped make this event a HUGE success.
"...The Party in the Park was a briliant event and I am just really pleased that the Council were able to help the community to celebrate the special event without charge. It felt brilliant to be spectacularly patriotc for a day!" - Cllr Rachel Durant
